Fifth Grade Curriculum and Instruction
The Lorax
To celebrate Earth Day, fifth grade students read the book, "The Lorax". After reading, they created persuasive posters to encourage others to recycle and protect our environment.
Modifying the Natural Environment
Students in fifth grade learned about the many ways humans modify the natural environment. They learned how and why we change the environment through agriculture and building, and the positive and negative effects. Students brainstormed the consequences that these modifications can have on our Earth.
Recyclable Mini-Golf Course
In science, students used recycled materials to build their own mini-golf course to develop an understanding of engineering design. The students generated ideas, selected a design, and created a model. While building their course, they were constantly troubleshooting and improving their designs. Students presented their course and were able to try each others. We had many discussions about reusing and re-purposing materials to create something new!
Market Day Creations
In Social Studies, students created their own product to "sell" during our Market Day! This activity gave students a hands-on way to learn about economics. They became producers and consumers and learned about owning a business. Students reused materials that they had at home to create a product to sell to their classmates. Students used old credit cards/gift cards to make jewelry, used fabric scraps to make pillows, and used recycled paper to make "squishies" and comics. One student even sold pre-potted plants that he grew at home!
